Nano vs Tape vs Weft Hair Extensions: Which Method Is Right for You?

By Esther Alexander

Nano extensions attach individual strands with tiny rings. Tape extensions use flat adhesive tabs. Weft extensions add wider sections of hair in rows. Each can add fullness or length, but the right choice depends on your own hair, the result you want and the upkeep you can manage.

If you are worried about extensions showing, feeling heavy or making your hair harder to look after, those are useful questions to bring to your consultation.

The size of an attachment is only part of the decision. The amount of hair fitted and where it sits matter too.

What are nano hair extensions?

Nano tips are fitted strand by strand. A small ring holds each extension alongside a section of your natural hair, without heat or glue being used to attach it.

This allows your stylist to choose individual fitting positions. It can be useful when you want extra fullness in particular areas.

Nano extensions can be an option for finer hair because the rings are small. However, small rings still need enough natural hair to support and cover them. They are not automatically suitable for every person with fine or thin hair.

See Remi Cachet’s explanation of nano tips for more about the attachment method.

What are tape hair extensions?

Tape extensions come in flat sections, secured around sections of your own hair using adhesive tabs. They sit close to the head and can add volume, length or both.

Fitting is generally quicker than attaching the same amount of hair strand by strand. That can appeal if you would prefer a shorter fitting appointment.

The trade-off is looking after the attachment area. Oils and conditioner need to stay away from the tapes. If you swim regularly, tell your stylist before choosing this method, as pool chemicals can affect the adhesive.

What are weft hair extensions?

A weft is a wider section of extension hair fitted in a row. The fitting technique depends on the weft and your hair. Remi Cachet recommends a method using small rings and stitching for its wefts.

Wefts can add a larger amount of hair across the back of the head. Your stylist needs to check whether your natural hair can support the weight and cover the rows.

A weft is worth discussing if you want more fullness or length, but the number of rows and amount of hair should be decided after looking at your own hair.

Which extensions are best for fine or thin hair?

Nano tips and tapes may both be options. There is no single method that suits everyone.

Your stylist should check how much hair you have around each proposed attachment, its condition and how much extra weight it can support. They also need to see your parting and hairline.

If your ends look sparse but you like your current length, explain that. The recommendation may be a smaller amount of hair for fullness rather than a long extension fitting.

Our guide to hair extensions for fine hair looks more closely at this concern. If your main question is blending extensions into a shorter cut, see extensions for short hair.

Will the attachments show when I wear my hair up?

They can, depending on placement, how much natural hair covers them and the style you choose. Tiny rings or flat tapes do not guarantee hidden attachments in every hairstyle.

Tell your stylist if a ponytail or bun is part of your everyday routine. It helps to show how you normally put your hair up, rather than only bringing photographs of it worn down.

Can hair extensions damage your hair?

All fitted methods add weight to your natural hair. Unsuitable weight, excessive tension, poor removal or missed maintenance can cause problems.

Extensions should not cause pain or persistent pulling. If they do, contact your fitter promptly for an assessment rather than waiting for your next appointment. The American Academy of Dermatology’s advice on extension care explains why tension matters.

Hair that is too fragile to support a fitting may need a different approach. A consultation should include that possibility.

How much do nano, tape and weft extensions cost?

Your total needs to include the hair itself, fitting, cutting and blending, plus future maintenance.

At Esther Alexander, Half Head Installation & Finish is £215 with Sophia or £250 with Faith. Remi Cachet hair is charged separately. The amount, length, shade and method affect that part of the price.

A Half Head Refit is £130 with Sophia or £150 with Faith. This is our minimum refit service, including for smaller amounts of hair. Replacement hair costs extra.

Compare the current extension prices and what is included before deciding. At consultation, ask for your complete first-appointment price and the cost of keeping the extensions maintained.

What upkeep should I expect?

All three methods need care at home and professional maintenance as your natural hair grows.

That includes gentle brushing, cleaning and drying the attachment areas properly, using suitable products and returning for your recommended refit. Follow the Remi Cachet aftercare guidance alongside the instructions for your particular fitting.

Ask two separate questions: when will the fitting need maintenance, and when might the extension hair need replacing? Reusable hair still needs regular refits.

Your return interval depends on the method, your hair growth and how the fitting is wearing. Ask your stylist to explain that schedule before you commit.

What should I bring to an extensions consultation?

You do not need to arrive knowing which method to book. Bring:

  • A photograph showing the result you would like.
  • An idea of whether you want fullness, length or both.
  • Your budget for the first appointment and ongoing maintenance.
  • Details of how you wear, wash and style your hair, including swimming or frequent gym sessions.

Those details help your stylist recommend something that fits your routine.
